Another Fall Wedding

Today I directed another wedding.  The bride and groom were so cute!  One of my favorite parts of directing is meeting the families on both sides.  See today's cake below:

See that Cross?

 The brother of the groom made it. He went in the woods in Maine, cut down a tree, and made that beautiful cross for his brother and future sister-in law. 

They were shocked!  Why, you ask?  Because he is a non-believer. 

The groom met the bride, and she prayed day after day that her boyfriend would come to know Christ.    Finally, he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior after a church retreat. 

Little by little, and one by one, the groom's family has come to know the Lord.

So, the groom's brother wanted to surprise them with the cross.  He couldn't understand why they were so shocked when he presented it to them.  He asked, "Isn't this what you plan to base your marriage on?"  Indeed. 

Maybe he's turning a corner.

Oh, by the way, this is the first wedding I have directed where a chainsaw was used at the rehearsal.  The groom's brother had to cut an additional 18 inches off of the 11 foot cross and just so happened to have a chainsaw in the back of his truck. 

Every wedding directed brings another story.  Someday I will tell you about the time a bride asked me to put on one of the bridesmaid dresses for the day!

An autumn wedding

I directed a wedding on Saturday...not at our church.  It was a beautiful afternoon.  In contrast to the last wedding I directed, see this picture of the bride's cake!

Cake Wreck

I directed a wedding today.  There was a very beautiful bride, cute groom, gorgeous flowers, and everything seemed perfect...until the cake arrived.  I have never directed a wedding when a cake brought the bride to tears.  And can you blame her?  It wasn't the right color, the layers were uneven, and honestly, after it was cut - it was dry and uncooked in places.  There was an angel in the kitchen who did the best that she could.  She is a staff member at our church, and she mixed up some new icing to try to cover up the old tiffany blue.  The man who delivered the groom's cake (made by Angels Cakes and Confections) helped to try to fix the catastrophe.  However, as you will see in the picture below, the old color still bled through the new icing.  Overall, the bride was relieved with the "new" cake--even with all of its flaws. 

My goal in the future is to have a "plan B."  I will have Publix on speed dial and see what they can throw together in 3 hours time.  My advice for all you brides, brides' mothers, and friends of brides - please hire a reputable cake decorator. It is worth the extra couple of hundred dollars for your own peace of mind.  For our wedding, I had the decorator make a 6 inch tier of the design that I had chosen.  We sat down and reviewed it together, and I told her the things that I loved about the cake and the things I hoped she would change for the final cake.  This is such a small step that you can take to avoid the drama we faced today.

At the end of the day, Samantha and Will were happily married, and I pray that they have a beautiful life together.
